NIU Huskie Football: Northern Illinois Defensive End Larry English Earns MAC MVP Honor from League Coaches
Northern Illinois junior defensive end Larry English (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy), who led the Mid-American Conference in sacks while playing nearly every down for the Northern Illinois defense in 2007, became just the second defensive player ever to earn the MAC's Vern Smith Leadership Award Tuesday. The award, which is voted on by league coaches, annually goes to the MAC's top football player.
English becomes the third Huskie, and the second in the last two years, to win the Vern Smith Award, following in the footsteps of All-America tailback Garrett Wolfe, who earned the honor a year ago. NIU quarterback Tim Tyrrell was the league MVP in 1983.
